Travel Safe
You have a burglar alarm system installed in your home.
You are careful to set it each time you go to bed and each
time you leave the house.  You may even keep a gun in the
nightstand next to your bed.  You do this to protect yourself
from unwelcomed intruders.  Intruders who mean you physical
harm or who want the things that you have worked so hard to
acquire.

Why is it then that you do not take precautions when you
travel?  Each year people are burglarized, assaulted, raped
and even killed in the safety of their hotel or motel rooms.
These things do not happen just in the seedy places.  Crime
happens in all of the hotels and motels regardless of how
much you pay for the room you are staying in.

Let us say you decide to take advantage of that lounge
chair next to the pool.  It is a great day to go swimming.
You do not want to take your watch, it is not waterproof and
it will disrupt that even tan line on your arm.  You will not
need much money and those new gold earrings you brought for
the special dinner tonight are not necessary at poolside either.
You could just leave them in your suitcase, or tuck them
away in one of the room's dresser drawers.  Who would go in
your room?  Surely, housekeeping would not take them.  Would
they?  Do not leave your valuables in the way of temptation.
Bring a diversion safe with you.  A diversion safe is a small
safe designed to look like a common household product like
a can of hairspray, can of shaving cream, foot powder or soft
drink can. Some even look like a book. They look just like the
national brand product and they are light weight.  You simply
unscrew one end of the can model diversion safe and insert your
valuables. Someone may want your watch, money or earrings but
they are not likely to want your can of hairspray.

It has been a long day, it is late and your beat.  You go
to bed and your out like a light before your head hits the
pillow.  Suddenly you awaken to find a stranger in your room.
The room door was locked, your sure of it.  You never heard
the intruder enter. Personal intruder alarms can be the best
deterrent in this scenario.  One style is designed like a
door stop.  Use the alarm to block a door from being opened.
If anyone tries to open the door, a 120 decibel alarm will sound.
The alarm is pressure sensitive and will shut off when pressure
is released from the door stop plate.  It also works as a door jam.
Another style hangs on any door knob (non-metallic doors) and
it instantly and automatically sounds when an intruder
touches the door knob.  It also has 120 decibels of sound.
Both use one 9 volt battery.  Not only will they wake you,
they will make the intruder leave.

For something more high-tech, there is a product that
monitors air pressure.  It recognizes the smallest changes
in air pressure created by opening or closing a door or
window within a closed space of up to 1,000 square feet.
This is a great product for people who travel for business
and families on vacation.  Within the space protected, you
can move about freely, your kids can play and your pets can
run around.  This alarm allows you to live your life while
still protecting yourself and those you love.  If any change
occurs, such as a criminal opening a door or window, the
alarm sounds.  When the device is set to fine recognition
mode, a simple touch on your door handle will trigger the
105 decibel alarm.  This portable alarm enables you to be
safe and aware in any place you find yourself staying.  It
measures a small 2 3/4 inches by 1 3/4 inches by 1 inch and
uses two AAA Alkaline batteries.

Never underestimate the value of sound.  Keep a screecher
bedside.  A screecher aerosol alarm emits an "ear-piercing"
blast readily recognized as an emergency call for help.  Its
high-pitched shriek can be heard up to a quarter of a mile
away. Can you imagine the noise with your personal intruder
alarm blaring and your screecher screaming?  No intruder wants
attention.

If your room has sliding glass doors that lead to a patio
or out to the pool, consider a door jam. They not only
prevent sliding glass doors from being opened, most can be
adjusted to fit hinged doors as well.

All of these products are inexpensive, lightweight and
portable. They can also be used in your home, apartment,
dormitory room, or a recreational vehicle.  Each can make the
difference between staying safe or becoming a victim.
